Czech unions to launch media campaign against reforms

At the beginning of March, the CMKOS declared a strike alert in protest against the consequences of the government public finance reform and further reform plans, Zavadil said.

Last June, the unions staged a demonstration against the reform on Prague’s Wenceslas Square that was attended by some 30,000 people.

At present, the unions criticise high inflation that they say was provoked by the reform. They also disagree with the pension reform and Health Minister Tomas Julinek’s (senior ruling Civic Democrats, ODS) planned transformation of university hospitals and health insurance companies into business companies.

She said that foreigners were unable to fill the gap and that while so far nurses lacked only in Prague and other big tows their shortage is now visible across the country.

“According to the latest statistics, there are 78,000 nurses in the Czech Republic, including 5000 in Prague. In Prague alone, more than 400 nurses are lacking. No one has counted how many of them are lacking across the country,” Juraskova said.

The average monthly wage of nurses is about 21,000 crowns which means that the nurse receives for very demanding work with night and weekend shifts, without sufficient rest and …

More than half of respondents said that smoking should not be prohibited in night clubs and cafes, the poll showed.

An overwhelming majority of Czechs - 95 percent - believe that there should be a ban on smoking in theatres, cinemas and public transport premises. Three-quarters of respondents (76 percent) supported the smoking ban at work places, seven in ten respondents said that smoking should be banned at rail stations, bus stops and at airports.

Less than a quarter of respondents (24 percent) would support banning smoking at open public premises while 68 percent said they were against such a ban.

The threat probably arises from the long-lasting dispute over the validity of the financial claims that Radovan Krejcir, fugitive Czech entrepreneur who is prosecuted on suspicion of serious crimes, and his people allegedly operate with, Aktualne.cz says.

Cepro mainly deals with the transport, storage and sale of oil products. It also assists in the protection of the state material reserves.

Under the name of EuroOil it operates its own network of some 190 petrol stations.

The Interior Ministry is considering putting the Cepro management and buildings under police protection, Aktualne.cz writes.

CzechRep, USA to agree on radar treaty in couple of days

Pojar, the chief Czech negotiator on the treaty, did not confirm the information from today’s daily Hospodarske noviny (HN) that wrote, referring to Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek that the treaty had already been completed.

Topolanek told the paper that only the venue where the treaty would be signed must yet be agreed on.

Pojar said the United States made concessions in the remaining controversial chapter on the environment, and it does not insist on a reference to U.S. law being included in it. This has opened the path to the treaty’s completion, Pojar said.

“In one significant aspect the Americans have given in, so we might definitively agree on the main treaty within a couple of days,” Pojar said.

The tripartite is a regular joint meeting of representatives of the government, employers and employees. Its aim is to maintain social peace in the country.

Last week, Czech trade unionists angrily left the meeting of the tripartite after Topolanek sharply criticised them over their support for the meal ticket system.

Trade union officials have complained that Topolanek called them liars and thieves.

“I told them on Friday it was impossible for the opposition and the media to describe me as a liar. In fact, it is the unions who tell lies to their members and the employers who enable the shadow economy through the meal ticket system,” Topolanek said.
