According to the organisation, Schwazenberg’s participation in the coalition government of the Civil Democrats (ODS), the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and the Green Party will not threaten the Czech national interests as Klaus fears.

The forum intends to hand over the letter published in Czech and German versions on its website www.a-cz-dialog.net to Klaus on January 8, Janyr said.

He said that the initiative had thus reacted to Klaus’s statements made in the press this week. In his article in the daily Mlada fronta Dnes published on Thursday Klaus voiced concern that Schwarzenberg as foreign minister might not sufficiently protect the Czech Republic’s interests due to his ties with Austria.

The street value of the drug that the man attempted to smuggle from Buenos Aires, is about 7 million crowns.

This is the ninth seizure of cocaine this year. In the previous eight cases, 6.4 kilos of cocaine have been seized.

The customs officers this year also seized 12 kolos of heroin, 6.5 kolos of marijuana, 5 kilos of pervitine (methamphetamine) and almost 400 grammes of hashish.

“I am considering the possibility. However, this should not necessarily happen,” Christian Democrat (KDU-CSL) chairman Jiri Cunek told CTK, adding that it was only one of several alternatives.

Initially, the Christian Democrats intended to nominate Cyril Svoboda for the post of culture minister. However, Svoboda could become minister without portfolio in Topolanek’s cabinet, the server said.

Cunek is now considering candidates for the post. The original candidate for culture minister, Simeona Zikmundova, gave up the nomination due to the media criticism.

Iraq is coming to terms with its past and it is at least a partial satisfaction for the relatives of the victims of the crimes committed by Saddam Hussein, the statement says.

“There are still many supporters of the former Iraqi president in Iraq and it can thus be expected that in a short-term perspective the execution will provoke disturbances in the country. However, we firmly believe that from the long-term perspective, the end of the Saddam Hussein era will move Iraq closer to stability and democracy,” the ministry said.

The Czech Civic Democratic Party (ODS), Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and Green Party (SZ) signed yesterday a coalition agreement of ODS chairman Mirek Topolanek’s new government.

The coalition agreed on the Greens’ insistence not to build further units in the nuclear plant in Temelin, south Bohemia, that has been sharply criticised by Austrians, or elsewhere.

The coalition government is yet to be appointed by President Vaclav Klaus and ask the Chamber of Deputies for confidence. It, however, does not have a majority in the lower house.

Cunek said he would choose the new minister out of about 10 candidates.

Zikmundova (unaffiliated)decided to withdraw from the post after criticism in the media, and she prefers working in the Vysocina Regional Office instead.

The leaders of the election-winning ODS, the KDU-CSL and the Greens (SZ) signed a coalition agreement on Thursday.
